Discovering the Joy of a Purpose-Filled Life
We live in an era where we are constantly told to “put yourself first,” “build your brand,” and “chase your dreams,” it’s easy to believe that life is all about you. One profound truth i have learned is that the most meaningful and fulfilling life is found when we begin to live beyond ourselves. Living beyond yourself does not mean ignoring your dreams or pretending your needs do not matter. It means choosing to use your gifts, time, and influence to make a difference in the lives of others. It’s understanding that your life has a purpose greater than personal gain or recognition.
Imagine a candle. It does not lose its light by lighting another candle; instead, the whole room becomes brighter. As young women, each of us has the ability to bring hope, kindness, wisdom, and encouragement wherever we go. When you choose to lift others up instead of competing with them, we all shine brighter. Couple of weeks ago, while on a road trip in Porto Novo with some colleagues, one received an email about her promotion, I saw it and immediately screamed congratulations and was truly happy for her while she tried to minimize it, and i made a big deal to celebrate then she began feeling joyful about it and the group was in a celebratory mood. You see, we are elated when we celebrate others.
In my community, (The Propelled Life) we are reading the book “Free of Me: Why Life Is Better When It’s Not About You” this books steers us to understand that freedom comes when we stop making ourselves the center of everything. Instead of constantly asking, “What do I get?” we should begin to ask, “How can I serve? How can I encourage? How can I make someone’s day better?” This shift changes you because it helps discover your value, build stronger relationships, grow in confidence, and experience the deep joy that comes from living a life that matters.
Simple ways to begin living beyond yourself:
Encourage another young woman instead of comparing yourself with her.
Listen with empathy when someone needs to talk.
Offer your skills or time to help at home, church, school, or in your community.
Celebrate someone else’s success without feeling threatened.
Pray for others as intentionally as you pray for yourself.
Look for opportunities to solve problems instead of waiting for someone else to do it.
Purpose is often discovered through small, consistent acts of love, service, and faithfulness. Every time you choose kindness over selfishness, generosity over comparison, and service over self-promotion, you are becoming the woman God created you to be. This week, be intentional about living beyond yourself. Choose one person each day to encourage, support, or serve without expecting anything in return. Keep a journal of those moments and notice how serving others also transforms your own heart.
