Have you ever looked at your life and wondered, “Who am I really? You scroll through social media and see women your age getting married, launching businesses, traveling the world, receiving awards, or building successful careers. Everyone seems to be moving forward while you feel stuck, uncertain, and unsure of your next step. You know you have potential, but you struggle with confidence. You have dreams, but you are not entirely sure which direction to pursue. You want to make an impact, but first, you need clarity about who you are and what you are called to do. If this sounds familiar, you are not alone. A lady once told me she felt like her life was a movie, she was watching and had control over.
One of the biggest challenges facing young women today is identity confusion; the struggle of defining yourself based on other people’s expectations, achievements, opinions, and validation instead of understanding who you truly are. The result is comparison, insecurity, self-doubt, and a constant nausea that you are falling behind. The greatest gifts you can give yourself is acceptance of who you are today and permission to evolve into a different version of yourself tomorrow. Your journey is not about becoming someone else; it is about becoming more of who you were created to be.
Stop Comparing Your Journey to Someone Else's Timeline
The culture around us constantly encourages comparison.
We compare careers.
We compare relationships.
We compare finances.
We compare appearances.
We compare accomplishments.
Yet Scripture reminds us that “they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise” (2 Corinthians 10:12).
Comparison is dangerous because it shifts your focus away from growth and places it on competition. The only person you should compare yourself with is the previous version of yourself. Ask yourself:
Am I more self-aware than I was last year?
Have I improved my communication skills?
Do I handle challenges better?
Have I developed stronger emotional intelligence?
Am I more courageous than I used to be?
These are the questions that reveal true growth.
Success is more becoming a better version of yourself not someone else.
Why Identity Matters More Than Achievement
Many young women believe confidence comes after success, this i have found to be false, it usually seems so because of a false sense of pride until something happens. The truth is that confidence grows when you understand your identity. When you know who you are and why you are here, your actions are guided by your principles and purpose
Dr. Myles Munroe said:
“The greatest tragedy in life is not death, but a life without purpose.”
Purpose begins with identity and you cannot fully pursue your purpose if you are constantly trying to fit into someone else’s story. Many women spend years chasing achievements that look impressive but do not align with their gifts, values, or calling. Eventually, they discover that success without purpose still feels empty. The goal is simply to achieve and become more.
The Hidden Cost of Identity Confusion
Identity confusion often shows up in subtle ways.
You may find yourself, constantly doubting your abilities, seeking validation before making decisions, feeling intimidated by other people’s success or struggling share your ideas even changing yourself to gain acceptance. Over time, these patterns can prevent you from stepping into leadership, pursuing opportunities, and maximizing your potential. The good news is that confidence and clarity can be developed. Every day presents a new opportunity to choose with faith.
“Your future is not determined by your past. Your future is determined by the decisions you make today.” Cindy Trimm
3 Strategies to find You and Build Confidence
1. Develop Self-Awareness Before Seeking Validation
Self-awareness is the foundation of confidence.
Before asking others who you should become, spend time understanding who you already are.
Ask yourself:
What are my natural strengths?
What activities make me feel energized?
What values guide my decisions?
What challenges am I passionate about solving?
What impact do I want to create in the world?
Journaling, coaching, mentorship, prayer, reflection, and honest conversations can help you gain clarity. The better you know yourself, the less dependent you become on the opinions of others.
2. Focus on Progress Instead of Perfection
Perfectionism keeps many women trapped. They delay opportunities because they do not feel ready. It causes you to remain silent due to fear of making mistakes. Avoiding challenges will definitely lead to more challenges and failure so just start, growth requires doing, doing requires participation. Get on going now, lessons are learned along the way and that’s where you growth happens. It’s like seeing your child who eats, exercises and plays daily after three months their clothes no longer fits and then it is evident that your son/daughter has grown in the last couple of months.
So apply for the role, start the project, share your ideas, take the course, attend the event and develop the skill. Whatever needs to be done, do it now, every confident woman you admire started before she felt fully ready. Confidence is built through action, not waiting. Remember: Progress creates confidence.
3. Invest Intentionally in Your Personal Development
The woman you are becoming requires new skills, new habits, and a new mindset. Personal growth does not happen automatically. It requires intentional investment, the manual of life says buy the truth; read books, attend leadership trainings, build meaningful relationships, seek mentorship support a program/project that align with your values and goals, work with a coach and join communities that challenge and inspire you.
When you focus on building yourself, you become better at serving your gifts to the world. You become better at creating value, solving problems, and leading others. As your competence grows, your confidence grows and your impact expands which builds your legacy.
Many think legacy is something that happens later in life. The truth is that legacy is being built every day by your daily choices, habits and character. The life you build today shapes your legacy tomorrow. Do not spend your life wishing you were someone else. Do not allow comparison to distract you from your purpose.
Accept yourself and let the process work on you before it works for you and the end results would be worth it.
Trust your process and give yourself permission to evolve. The world needs the unique contribution only you can make.
