Have you ever asked yourself, “Why am I really here?”
That question has echoed through the hearts of many women I’ve coached over the last 10 years—and maybe it’s rising up in you too. You’re not alone.
The truth is, you were not born by accident or coincidence. You were created intentionally, beautifully, and purposefully: to solve a problem, meet a need, or serve a people. Whether that purpose expresses itself in leadership, business, creativity, advocacy, healing, or nurturing your life is designed to matter.
“The purpose of life is not to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate… to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson
Purpose gives your life focus. It strengthens your resilience. It anchors your confidence. It directs your energy. But most importantly, it’s not just about you. Purpose is discovered when you connect who you are with how you serve others.
So, how do you begin to discover your purpose?
Let me walk you through 7 simple but powerful steps to help you clarify your unique purpose.
Reflect on What Breaks Your Heart
Start by asking: What burden do I carry that I wish the world would fix?
Purpose often lies in pain—yours or others’. Is it injustice, poverty, the lack of direction among youth, or the silent suffering of women? What moves you deeply or makes you uncomfortable when ignored?
When something touches you this strongly, it could be a divine nudge. Pay attention to the burdens that keep tugging at your soul—they often reveal the problem you’re called to solve.
Identify Your Strengths and Gifts
Your purpose will rarely operate outside your zone of strength.
Are you a natural encourager? A strategic thinker? A gifted communicator or creative? Maybe you have an ability to organize chaos, create beauty, or bring peace. Purpose flows when your strengths are activated for impact.
Take a moment to list your top 5 strengths. How have they helped or blessed others?
When you use your gifts to serve others, purpose stops being a mystery—it becomes a mission.
Revisit the Stories of Your Life
Look back. What themes keep showing up in your life story? Where have you succeeded or survived?
Sometimes purpose is hidden in your personal journey—your healing from trauma, your rise from rejection, your breakthroughs after struggle. Those stories are sacred. They weren’t just for you; they are meant to be shared, used, and multiplied.
Your life experience equips you to help others overcome what you’ve already conquered.
Observe and Learn from Others
Sometimes clarity comes when you see someone else doing what lights your fire. Pay attention to people who inspire you, not to copy them, but to learn from them.
What careers, causes, or leadership styles are you drawn to? Which stories make you think, “That could be me”? Watch their habits, ask questions, and let their lives spark possibilities within yours.
Purpose leaves clues. Observation helps you find them.
Serve. Just Start Somewhere.
If you’re unclear about your purpose, start serving. Volunteer. Mentor. Join a cause. Help someone. Show up where needs exist.
Serving exposes you to opportunities, people, and problems—and these are purpose’s breeding ground. You’ll never discover purpose from a place of comfort and isolation. It’s in service that clarity often finds you.
Purpose is not a title you wait for; it’s an assignment you grow into through contribution.
Ask and Listen
Sometimes, others can see what you’re blind to. Ask people you trust:
- What do you think I do well?
- When have you seen me come alive?
- What do you think I could do more of?
You’ll be surprised how affirming and insightful their answers can be. God often uses others as mirrors to reflect the seeds of greatness already planted in you.
Partner with God in Prayer and Intention
Purpose isn’t just a plan—it’s a divine alignment. Spend time praying, meditating, journaling, and reflecting. Quiet your soul and ask:
- What am I being led to do in this season?
- Where can I create the most meaningful impact with who I am right now?
You don’t need to have your whole life figured out. Just take the next best step, in alignment with your inner convictions and calling. Purpose is often revealed progressively, not all at once.
Remember this: Purpose is not a destination—it’s a journey.
It evolves as you grow, gain wisdom, and expand your awareness. You don’t find purpose by chasing what others are doing. You discover it by becoming more of who you truly are. A woman who knows her purpose walks with a kind of quiet strength and clarity that cannot be faked or taken. She is grounded. She is driven. She is unstoppable.
And so are YOU.
So here’s your challenge this week:
- Start journaling about what breaks your heart and what brings you joy.
- List your strengths and ask someone close what they see in you.
- Serve someone in need.
- Take one small action toward what you think your purpose might be.
You’re not behind. You’re just beginning.
And purpose? It’s not hiding from you.
It’s waiting for you to show up.
You were created to solve a problem. Now go find it—and shine while doing it.
